AI Development Statistics 2026
A maintained index of 56 statistics on AI adoption, cost, agents, security, and governance – plus the market spend and model infrastructure behind them. Every figure is quoted the way its primary source states it and linked straight back to that source.
The short version
Across these 56 figures the picture is consistent: adoption is close to universal, measured value is not. 71% of organizations now regularly use generative AI in at least one business function, yet only 39% attribute any level of EBIT impact to AI and 74% have yet to show tangible value from it. The failures are operational rather than technical – at least 30% of generative AI projects are abandoned after proof of concept, and at least 50% are forecast to overrun budget through 2028 – while agents arrive faster than the oversight for them: 40% of enterprise applications are expected to feature task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, and only one in five companies has a mature model for governing autonomous agents.

How we verify these statistics
Every figure on this page is traced to a primary source – an analyst firm, a peer-reviewed paper, a statute, or the company that published the data. Nothing here comes from a secondary blog post, an infographic, or a number that has been repeated so often it lost its origin.
Where a source blocks automated fetching, the figure is confirmed verbatim across at least two independent tier-1 summaries before it is published. Anything that cannot be verified does not go on the page, however useful it would be.
Figures are quoted as the source states them. We do not round, restate a range as a single number, or strengthen a hedge – if a source says "at least 50%," this page says at least 50%. Each row links to the article where we first cited the figure, so you can read the context we used it in.
