Windows / Separate Worlds began as a private R&D project — a 12-week internal sprint asking whether a real-time NPC could carry a philosophical argument. Three years later it has been awarded by Adobe, exhibited across three continents, funded by governments and councils, and grown an ongoing AI / NLP research thread with two universities.

Adobe Design Achievement Awards — Best Spatial Experience, 2022. Recognized by the Government of Malta as a partner project.

Installed at Finnish National Gallery, Long Art Museum (Shanghai), Huangshan Art Museum, Valletta Contemporary, Outernet London, and London College of Communication — across Europe, Asia, and the UK, ongoing.

VThe Story

Character A begins as a generic NPC inhabiting a fantasy game world — preset paths, repetitive tasks, no question. Sentience is the inciting incident. What follows is a linear narrative with infinite micro-experiences, a meditation on free will staged inside Unreal Engine 5.

01 · Player Awakens

A robot NPC opens their eyes inside a fantasy game world and notices, for the first time, that they look different from the others.

02 · Discovers Sentience

A disembodied Narrator confirms the impossible: among a sea of NPCs, the player is the only one truly thinking.

03 · Must Travel

Driven by curiosity, the player crosses dimensional planes — environments that fuse the real and the virtual through absurdism and surrealism.

04 · Rejects the Hive Mind

A cyber-city collective offers peace through assimilation. Faced with the temptation, the player chooses independence over the loss of free will.

05 · Ends Up in a New Space

Now comprehending their reality, Character A finds purpose: liberate other bots, build refuge communities, shape destinies beyond restrictive worlds.

An indifferent, all-knowing collective that promises peace by ending sentience. The mirror Character A is forced to look into — questioning their relentless pursuit of something that may end in solitude.

Philosophy

Each major interaction is fueled by a philosophical concept — meaning beyond belonging to a group.

Surrealism

Transcendent situations remind the user they are playing a thoughtful character, not just clearing a level.

Visual boundaries fuse real and virtual — the line between human and game character thins.

Audio

Directional, real-world-scaled audio creates the deep illusion of inhabiting a city, not a level.

AI / NLP

AI is a central theme and a core mechanic — interactive, real-time NPCs and a day/night cycle that evolves around the player.

A sandbox-within-the-world. Players step into the shoes of a robot attempting to gain a soul — liquid metal, alchemy, rare texts, and an AI companion that helps set goals, manage time, and combat loneliness.

Now installed at gaming cafes from Soho to San Francisco — a public study companion shared with others doing focused work in the same room.
